Governor Inuwa Yahaya Mourns Victims of Lawanti LPG Truck Tragedy, Donates N5 Million to Bereaved Families

Gombe State was thrown into mourning on 12th January, 2025, following a tragic accident in Lawanti Village, Akko Local Government Area, where a heavy-duty Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker rammed into residents, claiming five lives and leaving several others injured. 

The deceased were identified as: 

Babayo Bello Konkeje (60) 

Ahmadu Adamu Konkeje (43) 

Yahaya M. Manu Konkeje (40) 

Haruna Abdu Shulto (45) 

Yana Alhaji Jarami Dunumari (51) 

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, joined grieving families, community leaders, and residents at the Janazah (funeral prayer) held at the Palace of the District Head of Lawanti. He described the incident as a painful and devastating loss, not only to the Lawanti community but to the entire Gombe State. 

“We are here today to share in the deep pain and sorrow of the Lawanti community over the tragic loss of five innocent lives in this unfortunate incident. On behalf of myself, the Government and the good people of Gombe State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” the Governor said. 

The Governor also extended condolences to families of seven other Lawanti members who lost their lives in a separate accident while travelling to Maiduguri in December 2025, noting that the cumulative losses have deeply saddened the state. 

He prayed for Allah’s mercy on the deceased, asking that their souls be granted Aljannatul Firdaus, and urged the families to find strength in faith.

Governor Yahaya commended the Lawanti community for their calmness and restraint in the aftermath of the tragedy, emphasizing that their discipline and respect for the rule of law prevented further escalation. 

As immediate support, he announced a donation of N5 million to the families of the five deceased victims to assist with burial and related expenses. 

The District Head of Lawanti, Alhaji Bello Hassan, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, describing the Governor’s presence and support as a demonstration of compassionate and people-centred leadership.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures to prevent future occurrences. Governor Yahaya’s swift response and empathy highlight the importance of leadership that stands with the people in their darkest moments.  End
