The journalism community in Nigeria is once again reminded of the risks reporters face in the line of duty, following a tragic road accident in Bauchi State that left several journalists injured. On Friday, 6th February 2026, a vehicle conveying 13 journalists was involved in a crash along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area. The journalists were covering the commissioning of projects by the North East Development Commission (NEDC), led by the Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, alongside top government officials. Those injured include reporters and cameramen from Channels Television, AIT, NTA, Arise TV, The Guardian, The Nation, NAN, Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC), Bauchi State Television (BATV), and other media houses, as well as the driver of the vehicle. They were first rushed to Yelwan Duguri Hospital for emergency care before being transferred to Bauchi General Hospital for further treatment. In a statement, the NEDC Governing Board, Management, and Staff expressed heartfelt sympathy to the NUJ Bauchi State Council, the Bauchi State Government, and the families of the victims. The Commission announced that it has approved full medical support and assistance to the injured journalists and their families, assuring them of its commitment to their recovery. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, also joined in solidarity. Chairman Faruk Muazu Gombe conveyed prayers for the speedy recovery of the victims and commended the swift response of medical personnel and government officials who facilitated the evacuation. He emphasized that the incident highlights the dangers journalists face daily and urged stakeholders to prioritize the safety and welfare of media practitioners during official assignments. Together, the NEDC and NUJ Gombe State Council have assured the Bauchi journalism community of their unwavering support. Their joint response underscores the importance of solidarity and institutional responsibility in protecting those who risk their lives to keep the public informed. End
