wed commitment from teachers, stronger leadership from head teachers, and active support from parents, the zone can overcome current challenges and set a new standard for qualityAzare, Bauchi State – The Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has raised serious concerns over teacher absenteeism and poor classroom practices in Katagum zone, following a monitoring exercise that revealed widespread lapses in schools. Officials say the findings underscore the urgent need for stronger accountability among teachers and head teachers, as well as greater parental involvement to safeguard the future of education in the area.
During the exercise, SUBEB’s Director of Quality Assurance, Malam Abbas Abdulmumini, lamented that many teachers operate without lesson plans or schemes of work, while others arrive late or fail to show up at all. At Ahmed Turaki Primary School, nearly 90 percent of teachers were absent by 8:00 a.m., a situation he described as “shameful.” He urged parents to ensure their children attend school regularly and on time.
Malam Zuhairu Usman, Director of School Services at SUBEB, stressed that head teachers must take full responsibility as leaders of their schools. He cautioned teachers to recognize their role as facilitators of education and agents of societal development, urging them to “change for the better” to build a responsible future generation.
The Education Secretary of Katagum Local Education Authority, Malam Mukhtari Habu, welcomed the monitoring visit, saying it would bring positive changes to teaching and learning in the zone. He called on School Support Officers (SSOs), Assistant Education Officers (AEOs), Assistant Village Teachers (AVTs), principals, and head teachers to redouble their efforts toward achieving meaningful progress in basic education.
