A New Dawn of Safety: NEDC Commissions Modern Fire Station at ATBUBy, Abdulwahab Muhammad published by Alphapressmedia.

When you walk through the sprawling campus of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, you can’t help but notice the hum of activity—students rushing to lectures, researchers tucked away in labs, and the vibrant energy of over 23,000 young minds shaping their future. But behind this energy lies a silent concern: safety. That concern has now been met with a powerful solution. The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has gifted ATBU a state-of-the-art fire service station, complete with a modern firefighting truck, functional borehole, and staff offices. More than just infrastructure, this project is a shield of protection for the university community and its neighbors.Universities are hubs of innovation, but they are also vulnerable to risks—laboratory accidents, hostel fires, and natural hazards. For ATBU, the new fire station is not just a building; it’s a commitment to resilience. The station is equipped to respond to emergencies at any time. Water security: A borehole ensures constant supply for firefighting and campus needs. Community impact: Beyond ATBU, surrounding communities in Bauchi stand to benefit. At the commissioning ceremony, Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Uba Maigari Ahmadu, emphasized the importance of ownership: “This project belongs to the university community. When you own it, government knows its efforts are appreciated, and resources are not wasted.” The Managing Director of NEDC, Mohammed Goni Alkali, echoed this sentiment, stressing that the facility was built to save lives and property and must be maintained to achieve its purpose. Representing the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Dauda Adamu Bakum (University Librarian) described the fire station as: “A beacon of security equipped with modern firefighting tools and a rapid-response vehicle. It will safeguard our laboratories, hostels, lecture halls, and the over 23,000 souls who call ATBU home.” He pledged that ATBU would integrate the facility into its emergency protocols, training programs, and outreach initiatives, ensuring its benefits extend beyond campus gates. The project is part of NEDC’s broader mission to rebuild and strengthen infrastructure across the North East. During the visit, the team also inspected the ongoing construction of Government Science Secondary School, Bauchi, urging contractors to deliver within three months. This fire station is more than bricks and mortar—it’s a symbol of safety, resilience, and hope. For ATBU, it means peace of mind. For Bauchi, it means stronger community protection. And for the North East, it’s another step toward sustainable development. As students return to their labs and lecture halls, they do so with the reassurance that their university is not just a place of learning, but a fortress of knowledge and safety. End
