The Bauchi State Government has successfully evacuated 64 students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) following a violent crisis in Anguwan Rukuba that reportedly claimed 27 lives.The students were received in the early hours of Friday at the Government House in Bauchi by the Commissioner for Higher Education and Regional Integration, Hadiza Abdulkadir Kango.According to the Commissioner, the evacuation was triggered by a distress call from the President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS), Mohammed Suleiman Abdulwahab, who alerted authorities about the students trapped in their hostels amid the unrest.“Immediately I received the information, I took action and the government responded swiftly, providing full support and cooperation to rescue the students,” she stated.She confirmed that all 64 students arrived safely in Bauchi and are being reunited with their families.Governor Bala Mohammed CommendedThe Commissioner described the successful evacuation as a reflection of the proactive leadership of Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.“This may be the first time UNIJOS students are being evacuated during such a crisis in Plateau State. It speaks volumes about the Governor’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Bauchi citizens,” she said.She also expressed personal gratitude that the operation was carried out successfully during her tenure.Students Praised for DisciplineKango commended the students for staying together, avoiding involvement in the crisis, and maintaining discipline throughout the ordeal.“Their conduct shows responsibility. My advice is for them to remain focused on their education and continue to be law-abiding,” she added.Speaking earlier, the NUBASS President confirmed the evacuation process, noting that multiple government officials were engaged immediately after the students raised the alarm.“We escalated the matter to the Honourable Commissioner, the Secretary to the State Government, and the Chief Security Adviser. Approval was promptly granted, and buses with security personnel were deployed for the evacuation,” he explained.He praised the government’s consistent responsiveness to student welfare and broader security concerns.The student leader further highlighted the government’s continued investment in education, including scholarship programmes both locally and internationally.“This intervention shows the government’s dedication to protecting its students and responding swiftly to emergencies,” he added.
