Smallholder farmers and stakeholders from Bauchi, Kano and Kaduna states participated in a sensitisation workshop in Bauchi on Tuesday, as the Bauchi State Government renewed its commitment to improving agricultural opportunities for women, young people and persons with disabilities.
Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, declared the workshop open. The event formed part of Bauchi State’s agriculture celebration.
The Governor described agriculture as the backbone of Bauchi State’s economy and said his administration was working to help farmers move from subsistence production to commercially viable agriculture. He stressed that meaningful support must extend beyond seeds and fertiliser to include finance, modern farming techniques and access to profitable markets.
He said the state was collaborating with Sahel Consulting Agriculture and Nutrition Limited and MEDA under the Resilient and Inclusive Agri-Food Systems Empowering Women and Youth Rice Project (RISE), with support from the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Iliyasu Aliyu Gital, said the workshop was designed to equip vulnerable farmers with the knowledge to improve production, add value to their produce and better understand agricultural markets.
He said participants from Bauchi, Kano and Kaduna would examine challenges at the production and marketing stages. Their recommendations, he added, would help identify practical ways to strengthen agricultural marketing.
