Residents of Bauchi were left stunned after a group of teenagers allegedly organised a clandestine wedding ceremony among themselves, with reports indicating that a bride price of N3,000 was paid during the arrangement. The incident, which has sparked concern among authorities and community leaders, involved minors said to have coordinated every aspect of the marriage process without the approval or awareness of their parents. The young couple, alongside several others connected to the ceremony, were eventually intercepted by operatives of the Bauchi State Vigilante and Youth Empowerment Agency working in collaboration with the Bauchi State Police Command.Among those apprehended were individuals identified as wedding guests, an Imam accused of conducting the marriage rites, and an underage girl who allegedly assumed the role of the bride’s mother during the event. The teenagers were later presented before the Bauchi State Action Committee on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence led by the wife of the governor, Aisha Bala Mohammed.Reacting to the incident, the Commander of Hisbah in Bauchi State, Mohammed Mohammed Bununu, described the marriage as unacceptable and invalid, especially as the bride’s father reportedly denied consenting to or having any knowledge of the arrangement. He stressed that such actions contradict societal and religious values upheld in the state, calling on parents and guardians to become more proactive in monitoring the activities and associations of their children. On her part, Aisha Bala Mohammed linked the development to deepening social challenges including poverty, parental negligence, moral decline, and poor upbringing. She emphasised the urgent need for stronger family values, closer parental supervision, and proper religious and moral guidance to prevent children from drifting into harmful and irresponsible behaviour. The incident has continued to generate conversations across the state, with many residents describing it as a reflection of broader societal concerns affecting young people and family structures
