BAUCHI — The Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has intensified its push for national power ahead of the 2027 general elections, with its presidential candidate, Engr. Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, and National Chairman Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle pledging to build the party into a credible political alternative for Nigerians.
The leaders made the commitment on Thursday at the APM National Elective Convention in Bauchi, where Governor Bala Mohammed was formally inaugurated as the National Leader of the party, alongside newly elected national officers.
Addressing delegates and party supporters, Makinde, who is also the Governor of Oyo State, said Nigeria needs a strong and credible opposition capable of presenting citizens with a genuine alternative in 2027.
He argued that the next general election should move beyond slogans, announcements and unfulfilled political promises to a contest based on measurable outcomes and practical solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerians.
According to him, citizens should assess political leaders by their ability to improve livelihoods, create jobs, strengthen agriculture, provide quality education and healthcare, enhance security and expand economic opportunities, particularly for young Nigerians.
Makinde also advocated a restructuring of Nigeria’s federal system through greater devolution of powers and resources to states and other levels of government closer to the people.
He maintained that decisions affecting communities would produce better results when greater responsibility and resources are placed closer to citizens.
The APM presidential candidate further called for a new political culture founded on trust, accountability, issue-based campaigns and measurable development plans, stressing that political differences should not turn opponents into enemies.
He congratulated Governor Bala Mohammed on his emergence as the party’s National Leader and urged APM members to strengthen the party’s structures nationwide while building constructive engagement with other opposition forces ahead of 2027.
Bala Mohammed: APM Will Not Disappoint Nigerians
In his acceptance speech, Governor Bala Mohammed expressed appreciation to the leadership and members of the APM for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to work with other stakeholders to transform the party into a formidable national political platform.
He assured Nigerians that the APM would pursue an inclusive political agenda anchored on competence, unity, security and economic development.
Governor Mohammed also pledged his support for the presidential ambition of Engr. Seyi Makinde, describing the APM presidential ticket as one designed to bring together experience and expertise in confronting Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
He described Makinde’s pairing with the party’s vice-presidential candidate, former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Daura, as a strategic combination capable of providing leadership in critical areas, particularly security and economic recovery.
According to the Bauchi Governor, the APM would prioritise the fight against insecurity and hunger while promoting national unity, development and opportunities for Nigerians irrespective of ethnic, religious or regional backgrounds.
He called on Nigerians to support the party’s presidential ticket and other APM candidates, assuring that the party would strive to justify the confidence of the electorate.
Dantalle: We’ll Build Strong National Movement
The newly elected National Chairman of the APM, Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, reaffirmed the determination of the new leadership to expand the party’s presence and support base across the country.
Dantalle said the leadership would work to unite members, strengthen grassroots structures and attract Nigerians and political leaders who share the party’s commitment to democratic values, integrity, national development and service.
He said the APM’s objective ahead of 2027 was not merely to participate in elections but to present Nigerians with a viable political platform capable of responding to the country’s economic, security and governance challenges.
The Bauchi convention therefore set the tone for the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections, with its leaders projecting credible opposition, restructuring, inclusive governance, security, economic recovery and measurable performance as major pillars of its emerging national agenda.
