BAUCHI — Bauchi State is set to become a major centre of African democratic conversation as former presidents, serving leaders, eminent jurists, scholars and democracy advocates converge on the state for the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) Democracy Dialogue.
The fifth edition of the Foundation’s flagship dialogue is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, Bauchi, under the theme:
“Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?” �

The theme shifts attention beyond the conduct of elections to the strength and credibility of the institutions that sustain constitutional democracy — particularly political parties and the judiciary.
Jonathan, Bala Mohammed to Host African Leaders
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chairman and Founder of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed are billed to host the dialogue. �

The gathering is expected to feature an impressive line-up of African political and institutional leaders.
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo will chair the Dialogue, while Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama is billed as Special Guest of Honour.
Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima will be Guest of Honour, while former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma is also among the prominent African statesmen expected to participate. �

Professor Karuti Kanyinga, a board member of the African Leadership Centre at King’s College London, is scheduled to deliver the keynote address. Former Supreme Court Justice Amina Augie and Ghana’s National Democratic Congress Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia are also listed among the distinguished participants. �

Why Bauchi Matters
The selection of Bauchi carries historical significance. According to the Foundation’s announcement, Bauchi’s status as the home of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister, underscores its place in Nigeria’s democratic and political history. �

It also brings Governor Bala Mohammed’s relationship with the GJF Democracy Dialogue into sharper focus.
At the Foundation’s 2023 Democracy Dialogue in Yenagoa, Mohammed warned about threats to democracy arising from poverty, insecurity, declining electoral integrity and unconstitutional changes of government. �

Beyond Elections
The 2026 theme is particularly timely because it raises a fundamental question: Is holding elections enough to call a country democratic?
The Foundation intends the dialogue to examine how political parties, courts and other democratic institutions can protect constitutional government beyond election day. GJF Executive Director Ann Iyonu has described the Democracy Dialogue as a platform for consensus-building, policy engagement and knowledge exchange, bringing experienced African leaders together with serving officials, citizens and democratic institutions to develop practical solutions. �
