…500kVA solar power system, rehabilitated water scheme, Sumu Wildlife Park and modern entrance gate underscore push to restore iconic reserve to national prominence
The commissioning of major infrastructure and tourism projects at Yankari Game Reserve has further demonstrated the determination of Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, to reposition the historic reserve and restore its status among Nigeria’s leading tourist destinations.
The interventions, including a 500kVA solar power system, rehabilitation of the water supply scheme, development of Sumu Wildlife Park and construction of a modern entrance gate, represent significant steps towards addressing some of the infrastructure challenges affecting the reserve while improving the experience of tourists and other visitors.
For decades, Yankari has remained one of Nigeria’s most recognisable tourism assets, renowned for its wildlife, natural landscape and famous warm springs. Its enormous tourism potential, however, requires sustained investment in infrastructure, conservation, security and modern visitor facilities to compete effectively with other destinations.
The latest projects therefore signal a renewed effort by the Bala Mohammed administration to give the reserve the infrastructure needed to reclaim its place on Nigeria’s tourism map.
The 500kVA solar power system is particularly significant to the revitalisation drive, as reliable electricity is critical to the effective operation of accommodation facilities, administrative services, security infrastructure and other essential services within a major tourist destination.
Similarly, the rehabilitation of the water supply scheme is expected to strengthen access to water and improve sanitation and general service delivery within the reserve.
Another major component of the intervention is the development of Sumu Wildlife Park, designed to broaden the tourism and wildlife experience available to visitors while strengthening the state’s conservation and tourism offerings.
The construction of a modern entrance gate also gives the reserve a more befitting identity and provides visitors with an improved first impression of one of Bauchi State’s most important natural assets.
