A coalition of elders and youths from Nigeria’s North East has taken a bold political step to draft Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, into the 2027 senatorial race by purchasing the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form for Yobe East (Zone A).Operating under the banner of the North East Elders and Youths Forum, the group announced the decision at the end of its Executive Council meeting held in Bauchi.Speaking after the meeting, the National Chairman of the forum, Salisu Magaji Gombe, revealed that members across the six states of the region contributed funds to secure both the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for the governor.According to him, the move is aimed at persuading Governor Buni to contest the Yobe East senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.“Nigeria Needs Leaders Like Buni”Magaji described Buni as a “quintessential, detribalised and exemplary leader” whose presence in the Senate would strengthen democratic accountability.“At this stage of Nigeria’s political development, the country needs senators like Mai Mala Buni—leaders who can boldly check executive excesses and speak truth to power, regardless of whose interests are affected,” he said.
He added that the decision to purchase the form was not merely symbolic but a reflection of widespread confidence in Buni’s leadership capacity.Regional Backing, National Expectations
The forum emphasized that while the senatorial seat is for Yobe East, Buni’s representation would transcend the district.“We believe he will represent not just Yobe East, but the entire North East through his inclusive leadership and accessibility. His door has always remained open,” Magaji stated. The group highlighted Buni’s record in governance, citing achievements in peace restoration, infrastructure development, and social stability in Yobe State.
They also referenced his leadership role within the All Progressives Congress, particularly in fostering unity and cohesion during critical periods.Call to Service, Not Retirement
Magaji stressed that leaders of Buni’s calibre should not retire from public service at a time their experience is still needed.“You have done so much for Yobe State, the North East, and Nigeria at large. Leaders like you should not step aside now. This is why we have taken this decision,” he said.A ‘Legacy Project’ Backed by StakeholdersDescribing the forum as a “legacy group,” Magaji said it comprises patriots, professionals, technocrats, and artisans committed to sustaining and expanding Buni’s achievements. He noted that the governor’s development strides and governance style have earned him admiration across different segments of society, prompting the group’s intervention.Final Appeal
The forum concluded with a direct appeal to Governor Buni to accept the nomination and contest the 2027 Senate race.“This is a call to higher service—for Yobe State, the North East, and Nigeria. We urge him to heed this call in the best interest of the people,” Magaji said.
