The Bauchi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening media professionalism and enhancing public communication through sustained investment in digital broadcasting and capacity development.
This commitment was reiterated during the opening of a two-day capacity-building workshop organized by Bauchi State Television (BATV) under the theme, “Broadcasting in the Digital Era: Enhancing Digital Skills, Content Quality and Technical Excellence.” The workshop is designed to equip journalists and broadcasters with modern digital skills, improve content quality, and promote technical excellence in media practice.
Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Usman Usman Shehu, said the digital transformation of BATV has significantly expanded its audience beyond the borders of Bauchi State, placing greater responsibility on media professionals to uphold the highest standards of journalism.
He urged journalists to remain objective, accurate, and ethical, particularly as Nigeria approaches another election season. According to him, while social media has transformed information sharing, professional journalists must continue to serve as the most credible source of verified and balanced information.
Dr. Usman commended Governor **** for his unwavering support for the media sector, noting that the administration has implemented far-reaching reforms to reposition government-owned media organizations. These include the successful digital transformation of BATV, its migration to 24-hour satellite broadcasting, installation of solar-powered transmission systems, procurement of modern broadcasting equipment, and the provision of operational vehicles to enhance media operations.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Comrade Mukhtar Mohammed Gidado, represented by the Senior Special Assistant on Communication, Abdulwahab Muhammad, praised BATV management for organizing the workshop. He described continuous training as indispensable in preparing media practitioners to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving digital communication environment and urged participants to maximize the opportunity to improve their professional competence.
In his goodwill message, the Royal Father of the Day, His Royal Highness Alhaji Aliyu Yakubu Lame, the Emir of Lame, applauded the Bauchi State Government for prioritizing the development of the media sector through regular capacity-building initiatives.
The Emir called on journalists to uphold the principles of fairness, responsibility, patriotism, and professionalism, stressing that responsible journalism remains fundamental to promoting peace, national unity, political stability, and sustainable development.
The workshop attracted journalists, broadcasters, media managers, and communication experts from government media organizations across Bauchi State. Participants are expected to gain practical knowledge on emerging trends in digital broadcasting, content creation, ethical journalism, and strategic communication, further strengthening the capacity of media professionals to deliver quality public service broadcasting in the digital age.
