Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has directed the immediate study and implementation of recommendations contained in the report of the Taskforce Committee on the Reforms and Revitalization of Basic and Technical Education in the state.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the report as a critical blueprint capable of driving far-reaching transformation in the education sector, with particular emphasis on improved learning outcomes, effective administration and the development of a skilled, future-ready workforce.
The Governor gave the assurance while receiving the report presented by renowned educationist and member of the committee, Mr. Tom Mataimaki Maiyashi, alongside the Commissioner for Education and Chairperson of the Taskforce, Associate Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari.
He said his administration would not allow the report to gather dust, stressing that its recommendations would be carefully studied and translated into concrete action.
“On the report, I want to assure you that we are not going to abandon this document. We shall study it immediately and begin implementation of the recommendations,” the Governor said.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya explained that the reforms form part of his administration’s broader commitment to repositioning education through bold policy decisions and structural adjustments in line with Gombe State’s 10-year development agenda, DEVAGOM.
According to him, the reform process has already begun with the merger of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Education into a single ministry to strengthen coordination and eliminate administrative fragmentation.
“We will do structural adjustments in the education sector. I can even say that we have started because I have now merged the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Education to become one ministry, which is what is obtainable even at the federal level.
“This will strengthen coordination, improve policy implementation and enhance service delivery across all levels of education,” he stated.
Reflecting on developments since his administration assumed office in 2019, Governor Inuwa Yahaya said the government inherited an education sector confronted by numerous challenges but has since recorded significant progress through sustained interventions in infrastructure, teacher development, school enrolment, access to quality education and institutional reforms.
The Governor renewed his commitment to consolidating those achievements before the end of his administration.
“We knew how we met this sector when we came into office in 2019, and we thank God that we have been able to achieve so much.
“I want to reiterate the pledge I made that we will leave Gombe better than we met it in the education sector. That commitment remains unwavering, and we shall continue to invest in reforms that will guarantee quality education for our children and future generations,” he affirmed.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Mr. Tom Mataimaki Maiyashi, a former Commissioner for Education in Kaduna State, commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for what he described as visionary leadership and foresight in constituting the Taskforce.
Maiyashi said the administration’s investments and achievements in education had already provided a strong foundation upon which further sustainable reforms could be built.
He described the report as an honest assessment of the realities confronting basic and technical education in Gombe State, assuring the Governor that its recommendations were practical, realistic and implementable.
He urged the government to proceed earnestly with implementation, expressing confidence that faithful execution of the recommendations would significantly transform the state’s education system and position Gombe as a model for educational excellence.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education and Chairperson of the Taskforce, Associate Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, explained that the committee was inaugurated in November 2025 with a mandate to critically assess the condition of basic and technical education in Gombe State and develop actionable strategies for reform.
She said the committee was also mandated to recommend practical measures capable of restoring the lost glory of schools across the state and addressing other challenges affecting effective teaching and learning.
According to her, the committee concentrated on key thematic areas, including teacher-related challenges, infrastructure deficits, governance and administration, student welfare and learning conditions, security and community-related issues affecting schools.
She disclosed that the findings were subsequently developed into eight priority reform clusters requiring urgent government intervention to accelerate improvements across the education sector.
Associate Professor Maigari commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for demonstrating strong political will by constituting a high-powered committee of experienced professionals and education experts.
The Taskforce Committee comprised Associate Professor Aishatu Umar Maigari, Gombe State Commissioner for Education; Dr. Nura A. Yakubu, OON, former Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE); Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, former Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC); Mr. Tom Mataimaki Maiyashi, education consultant and former Kaduna State Commissioner for Education; Dr. Sadiq Gombe; the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB); and the Permanent Secretary, Special Services and Political (SS & POL), Government House, Gombe.
The submission of the report marks another stage in the administration’s education reform programme, with attention now shifting from assessment and recommendations to implementation and measurable outcomes.
